چکیده

Conway and Smith’s book is a wonderful introduction to the normed division algebras: the real numbers (R), the complex numbers (C), the quaternions (H), and the octonions (O). The first two are well-known to every mathematician. In contrast, the quaternions and especially the octonions are sadly neglected, so the authors rightly concentrate on these. They develop these number systems from scratch, explore their connections to geometry, and even study number theory in quaternionic and octonionic versions of the integers. Conway and Smith warm up by studying two famous subrings of C: the Gaussian integers and Eisenstein integers. The Gaussian integers are the complex numbers x+ iy for which x and y are integers. They form a square lattice:

Some remarks regarding Quaternions and Octonions

In this paper, we present some applications of quaternions and octonions. We present the real matrix representations for complex octonions and some of their properties which can be used in computations where these elements are involved. Moreover, we give a set of invertible elements in split quaternion algebras and in split octonion algebras.

Quaternions and Octonions in Mechanics

In fact, this group is Spin(3), the 2-fold cover of SO(3), the group of rotations of R. This has been known for quite some time and is perhaps the simplest realization of Hamilton’s expectations about the potential of quaternions for physics. One reason for the renewed interest is the fact that the resulting substitution of matrices by quaternions speeds up considerably the numerical calculatio...

Matrix Representations of Octonions and Their Applications

As is well-known, the real quaternion division algebra H is algebraically isomorphic to a 4-by-4 real matrix algebra. But the real division octonion algebra O can not be algebraically isomorphic to any matrix algebras over the real number field R, because O is a non-associative algebra over R. However since O is an extension of H by the Cayley-Dickson process and is also finite-dimensional, som...

A Quantum Octonion Algebra

must be the field, two copies of the field, the split quaternions, or the split octonions. There is a natural q-version of the composition property that the algebra Oq of quantum octonions is shown to satisfy (see Prop. 4.12 below). We also prove that the quantum octonion algebra Oq satisfies the “q-Principle of Local Triality” (Prop. 3.12). Inside the quantum octonions are two nonisomorphic 4-...
